The role of the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs)

In the UK MNOs are responsible for delivering the relevant infrastructure needed for the growing network. Through a network of contractors, the MNOs seek to develop a network of infrastructure requirements to support the mobile operators enabling and delivering the digital needs of our working and leisure lifestyles.

Typically, the MNOS deliver infrastructure requirements for:

  • Street works
  • Roof tops
  • Green field sites

The two main MNOs covering the mobile operators are Cornerstone (Vodafone, 02) and MBNL (EE and Three). These two companies rely on a framework of contractors and consultants to submit both the planning applications and to construct the infrastructure on their behalf. The role of these contractors is key in ensuring that the planning applications meet the requirements of the legislation.
