Ian is a Director of LDA Design and Environmental Planning Lead for the business. He is multi-award winning landscape professional and archaeologist with expertise in synthesising an understanding of place to inform compelling planning and design narratives for new development, infrastructure and environmental strategies.
With over 20 years in professional practice, Ian has developed expertise in landscape, seascape and townscape character assessment, landscape and visual impact assessment (LVIA) and green infrastructure planning and design, and the application of these resources. He also has specialisms in historic environments, valued and protected landscapes and the application of an understanding of ecosystem services to masterplanning and design to optimise positive outcomes for people and planet, build resilience to a changing climate and help nature recover and thrive.
Recent experience includes acting as LVIA lead for the Sizewell C project in Suffolk, where he also supported the development of the landscape masterplan, landscape mitigation strategy and design of key elements of the project. Ian also led the LVIA for the Waterbeach New Town East in Cambridgeshire. He also undertook a detailed appraisal of the setting of a collection of unique heritage assets at the nearby Denny Abby and helped shape the masterplan and landscape strategy for the new community.
Ian has authored or contributed to several national guidance and best practice documents. He was a member of the Advisory Panel for a joint project between CIfA, IHBC and IEMA to develop the ‘Principles for Cultural Heritage Impact Assessment in the UK’; co-authored an ‘Approach to Townscape Character Assessment’ for the Landscape Institute; and authored an ‘Approach to Seascape Character Assessment’ for Natural England. Ian is a Committee Member for the CIfA Landscape Special Interest Group and Co-Directs the Setting of Heritage Assets Course hosted by the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education where his focus is on the role of heritage professionals in the design process. He is a former Design Council expert and is a member of the Midlands Design Review Panel. He is a Fellow of the Landscape Institute and a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists. He has been a member of the Landscape Institute Policy and Communications Committee since 2011.
