Sally Humphries

During her career Sally has built up extensive experience advising on change to the historic environment. She has over ten years’ experience as a Heritage Consultant working at Purcell and before that gained valuable hands-on experience as a stone conservator working in the South-West region carrying out lime mortar repairs to historic buildings.

At Purcell her work includes documentary and archival research to investigate the history of buildings, the assessment of the significance of heritage assets and analysis of the impact of proposals which affect the historic environment. She gives advice both to Purcell’s own architects and to external clients on appropriate change and where mitigation measures and alternative design solutions could be applied to better protect and enhance historic buildings and places. This work culminates in the preparation of Heritage Impact Assessment reports to support planning and listed building submissions.

Sally also gives strategic advice to clients through the preparation of Conservation Management Plans, which give management guidance on the future care of historic places. These are often prepared to inform and support successful Heritage Lottery Fund applications for the regeneration of heritage assets. She has also prepared several Conservation Area Appraisals for historic areas which have been adopted as supplementary planning documents used by local authorities to guide development and change.

She has a varied portfolio of projects, from medieval castles, to country houses and twentieth century military sites. During her time at Purcell her work has taken her across England and Wales, as well as to Hong Kong. In more recent years her work has been focussed on the Eastern region, with increasing work in Essex. This includes advising on change to historic houses for clients who wish to extend or refurbish their properties, such as in Hazeleigh, a shops in Rochford, and new developments, for example in Wivenhoe. She has also recently prepared a Conservation Management Plan for Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome to support an HLF application.
