Hugh McEwen


Hugh is a registered architect who trained at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, and University of Nottingham. He established Office S&M with Catrina Stewart in 2013, with whom he has taught at Oxford Brookes University and The Bartlett, UCL.

Hugh previously worked for a range of housing specialists, most notably Pollard Thomas Edwards and Metropolitan Workshop, where he gained significant experience that has allowed Office S&M to successfully deliver its ambitious projects. As a partner at Office S&M, Hugh has led on the widely published Salmen House, Putnoe House, and Janus House, and has recently moved onto larger projects, including multi-unit residential schemes in Croydon, Bromley, and Kent.

Hugh’s role at Office S&M includes leading on collaboration and contacts with architectural teams; overseeing compliance and best practice in residential design; and providing policy advice on infill housing around London. He specialises in delivering projects and engagement that crosses between private and public realms, having led on the work for several high street regeneration projects, and worked on market renovations in Newham, Ilford, and Islington.

He has written for Building Design, Blueprint, and the Architectural Review, and his drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Show. Hugh’s expertise has led to him being selected for the Essex Quality Review Panel, and he was named as a winner of the 2019 RIBA Journal Rising Stars for his work at Office S&M.
