Steven Kearney

Steven is an architect with over 25 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. Early in his career, he delivered several award-winning, low-energy education projects and led major regeneration schemes, working with multidisciplinary teams, a wide range of stakeholders, community groups, politicians, and funding agencies, including central government.

He was also responsible for the production and adoption of Design Guidance SPDs, a number of detailed development and competition briefs, and has served as a judge for awards by the RIBA and Civic Trust. Steven was a member of the region’s first design review panel at Inspire East and of Peterborough’s Design Review Panel.

In 2008, he founded SKArchitects, based in Southend-on-Sea. The practice works across a wide range of sectors, including education (both private and state-funded), residential housing, leisure, and the charitable sector. The firm has received numerous awards and has been twice shortlisted for both the RIBA Stephen Lawrence Award and Building Design’s Architect of the Year (AYA) Awards.

SKArchitects operates at both macro and micro scales—developing site appraisals, masterplans, large housing projects, individual homes, and the restoration and reimagining of historic and listed buildings, as well as unique leisure projects. The practice also delivered one of the first certified Passivhaus sheltered accommodation projects in the UK.

Steven has lived in Leigh-on-Sea for nearly three decades and has worked across much of Essex, gaining a deep understanding of the complexities of planning, the importance of a sense of place, and how design quality can positively impact communities.
